Stress Relief: A Path to Wholeness
6-week series
next class TBA

Alta Bates Comprehensive Cancer Center, Berkeley

Mindfulness teaches us to be present in the moment with whatever is happening in our lives. Connection to our hearts teaches us to bring compassion and care to ourselves and others. Being embodied teaches us how to find relief from our obsessive thoughts and inner critic and enter the present moment. By cultivating access to each of these 3 centers of the body: head, heart, body, we can learn how to transform our ability to cope with the stress of everyday life, the stress of illness and cultivate balance, kindness and generosity towards ourselves and others.

This experiential course is modeled on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction technique pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center which is now used in hospitals and clinics worldwide.

The Stress Relief course meets for eight sessions and includes detailed instruction in relaxation and awareness techniques. We use the latest discoveries in "Polyvagal Theory" to learn how to regulate the nervous system and turn on the relaxation response. The class provides a supportive community and learning environment. It is a place to share and explore how each individual student can best utilize the practices. Each class builds on the next and includes daily home practice exploring what you learn in class. To receive the full benefit of the course, please make the commitment to attend all classes.

—mindfulness meditation
—gentle movement and awareness
—lovingkindness practice
—understanding the biochemistry of the brain and nervous system
—using somatic resources for stress relief
