Maura Singer Williams, MA is an interfaith minister trained at Naropa University and the Chaplaincy Institute. She was the chaplain and Spiritual Care Coordinator at the Alta Bates Summit Comprehensive Cancer Center where she designed and implemented the spiritual care program, provided spiritual counseling to patients and staff and created rituals for the Cancer Center community.
Maura now teaches in the Supportive Care Services program at the Alta Bates Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is an Integrative Medicine Educator and also has a private healing arts practice. She is on the professional advisory board for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and a preceptor for the chaplain residents in the UCSF's CPE program. She trains student chaplains in mind/body healing techniques, trauma informed spiritual care, as well as how to use dreamwork and ritual at the bedside. Maura is part of the Healing Circles program at Commonweal and is a Somatic Experiencing practitioner.
Maura has taught classes and workshops in meditation, stress reduction, mindful movement, and dreamwork at locations around the Bay Area including, Maitri AIDS Hospice, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, UCSF/Mt. Zion Medical Center, Upaya Center for Well-Being, Laguna Honda Hospice and Positive Care Unit, Commonweal, Smith Center for the Healing Arts. Prior to becoming a chaplain and Integrative Medicine Educator, Maura was the Program Director of Maitri AIDS Hospice for seven years.
Maura is an artist who has worked in many mediums. Currently she is exploring breaking, fusing and slumping glass inspired by the Jewish shamanic principles of shevirat ha-kelim (the shattering of the vessels) and tikkun olam (repairing the world). See the tikkun olam page for more on this.
She uses visual art, music/chanting and expressive movement as sources of personal healing and inspiration. Creativity informs her teaching and guides her in her work with individuals and groups.
Maura's most recent projects are: co-founding, 12 years ago, Dancing Saved My Life, a grassroots community program that raises funds for retreats for younger women with cancer; and co-directing Mooluz Healing Arts, a community arts studio in Temescal, Oakland, offering classes and groups in transformative arts and individual somatic counseling.
